Tartan shorts / underwear ? (MacGregor tartan - 1920s/40s) Rare?
Evening all.
Looking for information on these tartan wool 'shorts / underware' (or do they have a particular name? ). Part of the evening set comprising of 10 pieces.
'Make Do & Mend' looks to be in full force with a number of repairs. Damn moths!! I'm loving the cinch back with buckle fastening - I'm sure this design relates to a certain era (Thinking back to the Levi jeans with the same design). The belt hoops are also fitting with age. The lining suggests they were hand made and there is a 6 button fly. Quite fancy I have to say !
A certain internet search on 'Prima' buckles gave me the following : 'Third Reich Military outfitters / tailors - The famous Prima claw buckle used as a waist adjustment buckle on the rear of the army Mod 37 (1937) enlisted straight leg trousers'.
After reading this I was able to check a British Army uniform around the late 30s, only to find the same 'Prima' buckle attached to a waistcoat. This should help me date the item...
I'm yet to find any modern re-makes of the shorts. Or are they still in production? Answers on a postcard please.
Warm Regards, Gil
