Them darn kilts

Hey folks
I am in the process of finding/getting my first kilt. Am looking for Ulster Red in anything but heavy weight since we live on the western slopes of the Rockies in Colorado(dry hot weather at times). I like what I'm hearing about the SWK products but they don't have that tartan. Are ther any other US retailers out there for me to look into? I've been looking at the internet and have been finding zip so far and have no idea about the exchange rates for the pound to the dollar. I'd rather shop U.S.A. All Irish red or Donegal Irish County Crest, or Ulster Red Modern. Any ideas?

You can try Matt Newsome at http://http://www.scottishtartans.org/, he is in NC and might be your best bet. Or try Rocky at USAKilts he might be able to order that tartan in Poly-viscous. BTW both are reputable gentlemen and forum members.

Right...hot dry....it was deep white stuff in the San Juan's today!

Don't know that you'll find those tartans in a low priced kilt. You will find them in a quality kilt and the best way to make the fabric selection is contact a reputable kiltmaker, as mentioned above, and ask them what fabric weights are available. They can order it in to their shop and sew it up. Add Kathy Lare www.kathyskilts.com to your list. She's down in Albuquerque.

There are so many mill choices and fabric weights and so many ways to screw it up if we're not knowledgeable, its best to chose a kiltmaker and work through them.

The Donegal County Crest Tartan is proprietary to Marton Mills and only available in P?V, The Ulster District Tartan WR792 is only available in Wool from Dalglish Mills in 13 and 16 oz. It is not a solid red but alternating Red and Green. The Ulster Tartan #1196 is alternating bands of Brown and Tan with a small red overcheck, found in 1956 it was probably originally Green but was stained by peat. This Tartan is only available as a special weave.

Rocky does not carry The Donegal County Crest Tartan as a stock Tartan but can order it. As can I and any other kiltmaker.

It seems from your post that you are looking for a more Traditional Style Kilt rather than one of mine with pockets so I suggest you check out USAKilts.com then call Rocky. I'm sure he would be happy to help.

Thanx for the excellent info from all so far. It really helps. My sons and I will probably look into kilts made for us in the Donegal tartan, and check in to the leads given to us here. In the mean time both Celtic Croft and SWK offer lower priced kilts. Croft offers the Ulster Red Modern in their economy kilt and I may get the Irish Pride from SWK as a hiking kilt. BUT I am always open for suggestion........ This forum is a great place to get info rather than aimlessly wandering the WWW and often getting conflicting info. Thanx again to all.

Matt Newsome (kilts.albanch.org) has made kilts in the Ulster and Ulster Red tartans; as the owner of one of his 4-yd. box-pleated beauties, I highly recommend Matt. Not only is he a skilled kiltmaker, but he is also the epitome of a gentleman!

I have a MacNulty in my family tree -- The Rev. Rob Roy McGregor MacNulty, to be exact.

Anyways, email Jerry at Stillwater. He very well may be able to get you your tartan even though he doesn't stock it. He has for me.

Dry heat is far better for kilting than humid heat. You won't do too badly with a 16 oz. fabric, especially since you end up with a dry cold for (more than) half the year. I've done my fair share of kilted hiking in desert environments, and I know I'd rather be there than in some swampy heat.
