U.S. Marine in need

Greetings

To start I am a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps. I am currently stationed in Iraq and had sometime to look up my families ancestry while I am here. I found out that my family is 25% German, 25% Irish, and 50% Scottish. I have always been interested in trying out wearing a kilt, but was afraid to because I did not know my ancestry. Now I do and I have no fear in wearing one... except for the fear of my hire command.

We have to keep up a military apperence even in civilian attire. Even though I wear mostly whatever I want on my time off... I still am trying to figure out if it will be frowned appon on base or my command. I have looked all through our codes of conduct and only thing I can find they might try to get me with is... I hate to say it cross dressing. But wearing a kilt is not cross dressing! Is there any former or current military members out there that can give me advise?

I say, get a leather neck tartan kilt. If they have problems with that, then they're not marines!

You could also point out that some of your allies wear the kilt.

Well, thing is if they have a problem, you have a problem as well. I would say keep diligent and wear a kilt when you get home.

First, let me say welcome to Xmarks from Scotland.

Second...
Take the plunge and have a talk with them. Tell them about the leatherneck tartan and find accessories and shirts that will give your outfit a military feel. Tell them about the Highland regiments.
Explain that it is a part of your heritage you want to celebrate and that you feel you can make the kilt look smart and military, but be honest and say you do not want to push it if it is something they don't agree with.

I wear a kilt quite often and no one around here has a problem with it. judging by you name are you Motor t by any chance?

You have three options.

First, you can ask around, but be advised, any current or former military people on this site would be happy to see you in a kilt. If I saw a member of my platoon in a kilt, I'd be pretty stoked.

Second, you can talk to your chain of command about it. Start with your squad leader and see what their opinion is.

Third, you can just do it. It may well be that if you choose this route and you wear your kilt with pride and dignity, they will just leave you to your own devices.

But, be prepared to take a little bit of crap. Hell, I get crap for wearing a kilt and I'm an officer.
