Velcro?

hey every body. i'm a new kiltie and very excited to have found this place.

at the moment, i have a tank -my first kilt- that i'm planning on wearing to my sister's wedding this fall, but i'm looking for a more casual option for more day-to-day wear. all the casual kilts that i'm finding online have velcro rather than the leather buckles. of course the buckles are more formal, but will velcro do the job? i'm not looking to play rugby in it or anything quite that strenuous, just looking to preserve my modesty.

Actually if you look around (USAKilts and Stillwater Kilts to name a couple) you'll find a variety of wool, polyviscose, and acrylic kilts all with straps and buckles. Having said that - I'm sure velcro will do the trick. That stuff, while not traditional, is pretty darn amazing!

I have an Amerikilt with a velcro waist fastening. Fortunately it aslo has press studs on the apron because the velcro tab is too small. It will not stay closed without a belt over it.

Personally, I prefer the look of a kilt with a belt. But I'm not a huge fan of the big, shiny belt buckles of traditional kilt belts except for more formal settings. I have this belt from Amerikilts for wear with my traditional-looking kilts (it comes in black, too), and I just use some of my wider p@nts belts with my khaki Sportkilt or my x-kilts.

Throwing on a belt may ease your concerns over the velcro alone.

Sportkilt will add buckles to their kilts for a few dollars.
USA Kilts semi-trad is a better option though as far as quality goes.

I have a Still Water Kilt Thrifty in the Leatherneck tartan and that is velco. It is a wider velcro and stays great around me all day. With a belt and sporran you don't miss the buckles!!

If it has got Velcro fasteners, it is likely that it doesn't have proper pleats, sturdy fabric... A thrifty kilt might not even resemble your traditional kilt. It won't swish and sway, except for in the wind.

Welcome from Michigan USA Kilts has a casual that is made to fit. The quality is top notch. I have a semi-trad from USA Kilts and it see's a lot of use.

Welcome from Minnesota. I personally like my Utilikilts, I have an original and a workman's. The Workman's is my favorite. You might consider http://www.celticwarriorkilts.com/ they are casual and sporty.
