Vest for Wedding

Next year I will be attending a wedding of one of my dearest friends who has requested I attend kilted. I am ordering my US Navy tartan tank very soon from Alexis Malcolm, and was wondering about a vest style that I saw. To my knowlege the wedding will take place during the day, in the fall.

As a general rule I do not wear collared shirts unless unavoidable. I do not have much a neck to speak of, and i end up looking like a mafia goon in a tie. I found a Civil war style vest and was intrigued by it. what do you guys think?



My idea was to wear this with a white or off-white shirt under, blue hose, dress shoes, spats (I know, but I like them and think they look sharp) and a bonnet for the outdoor reception.

Well, I like the vest but i'm not sure about for a wedding. How formal is it? What is everyone else wearing? Tuxedos or jeans? In a Cathedral or at the beach? Kinda depends on that in my opinion.

The wedding will be semi-formal, but only semi-traditional, if that makes sense at all. Not sure as to the location yet.

The spats are non-negotiable.

I did a google search for "Civil War Vest". Found the pattern by accident on a google search, but if you search what i listed, a bunch come up.

Are the two collars (shirt and vest), going to be rather bulky round your neck with the vest done up?

THats a good question. My Lady used to do a lot of Civil War clothing, and said that she has the pattern. if so, I was going to see about perhaps doing the vest in a lighter fabric than wool. My other thought was to wear a cotton shirt with a banded collar to try and minimize the choke hold.

Most articles of clothing that have a high neck line like this need to be custom made for me anyways, as i have a rather large neck (20" last I measured) but if I were to buy, say a dress shirt with a 20" neck, they usually end up looking a circus tent and need to be taken in considerably.

There are plenty of shirts that have an "I-forget-what-the-collar-is-called" flat kind of collar. I think JAS Townsend offer to make their shirts with that kind of collar. More like this one!

I think the vest is pretty cool. Paired with a mandarin collar shirt and the right accessories, it will look great.
