    Wearing both ancient and modern

My kilt is modern Crawford. Just to have a variation I'm wondering if there is a social rule against carrying a plaid of ancient - or am I worrying too much?

I'd say you're worrying too much.

If you search here you can see quite a few photos of clan chiefs and other luminaries doing just that, wearing tartans that are variations of clan tartans rather than identical.

Go for it. In many cases, the different forms of the clan tartans compliment each other.
