Wearing Kilt 1st time test

So i'm really into this "the kilt is ok" movement. I have to admit as a former bagpiper i"m pretty familiar with wearing the kilt, and i loved it! I thought I would give it a test, wear my kilt with a golf shirt, oatmeal hose red garter and some comfy shoes. The problem is my kilt cost $400 and was hand sewn, so I am very protective of it. I'm probably just going to the mall then out to dinner, so it's not like I'm hiking or anything and its just this one time, so should I really worry about my "baby"?

If it goes well, I see more kilt purchases in my future!

You posted in the "advice" forum, so you are asking a bunch of kilt addicts whether you should be selective about when you wear your nice kilt?

The traditional among us will tell you that it's OK to save your kilt for special occasions.

The rest of us will say strap it on as often as you please.

The way I see it, the more often you wear it, the more economical your purchase becomes.

At $400, once a year for 20 years is $20 for each occasion. Once a week for 20 years is $0.38!

There was a time, long, long ago (back in the late 80s) when the only kilts available were your traditional "hand sewn" kilts. Despite being worn to all sorts of events they survived remarkably well with only average care. Had they been horses we'd have described them as "easy keepers". So wear your kilt and don't worry about it.

Most traditional hand sewn kilts can last for generations with just minimal care, I'll bet your kilt will stand up to a night out just fine. Who knows it may even appreciate being asked out to dinner.

First off WELCOME TO XMARKS!

Now, there is a reason that heavyweight 8yd handsewn kilts are lovingly called "tanks" here on xmarks, a coin termed by Jimmy Carbomb about 4-5 years ago (well before my kilted life). A "tank" is heavyweight and can take anything you throw at it in stride, and just keeps on coming. So feel free to take it out for a nice spin regularly. Just stay out of momma's rose garden and the machine shops.
