Or to get into the pub in Glencoe where the plaque on the door say "No Campbells". I don't know whether they mean that but I wouldn't try finding out (and I am a part Campbell on my grandmother's side)

There is a story(a true one too!) to that particular sign and it has nothing to to with the inter-Clan strife of the past and everything to do with the then landlord and his rather un-helpful bank manager who happened to be a Campbell, in, if my memory serves, the 1960's.

It sells a lot of beer though!

Thanks very much to you two, Jock and davidg, as well. Especially in pointing out that some of the old feuds may still resonate today. Or at the very least the social politeness of not mixing the clan tartans, just in case. I'll be sure to bear that in mind. I can say that it likely wouldn't bother the Scottish-decended side of my family if the tartans were mixed, but that's not Scotland, after all. These subtleties are important to take note of, especially with a Scotland trip coming up after I'm done grad school!

As a general rule of thumb I take all the knowledge I can get from whomever will share!
