What could I wear up top?

I am currently having a double box pleated kilt being made in the Auld Scotland tartan. Here is a sample that I borrowed from macmillan's son ( I hope you don't mind.)

And hose ( the green ones in the middle)

I am going to make flashes out of the tartan scraps and maybe get some dark red ones later on. My shoes will be brown wingtips.

Here is the question. I have always had shirts and sweaters to wear with my kilt. But I want something a little more refined. I am in love with the Tweed jacket and vest from USA kilts in the tweed poacher or Tweed Green Lovat/Fen

I don't have a ton of money so this will take about 6 to 8 months of saving. I am looking for another option around $100 to $200 to get me by on for the random events I will wear the new kilt to.Any suggestions? I have even thought about getting a sport coat from a discount store and getting it altered to a kilt jacket. What do you think about dark grey? Other suggestions are welcome.

Dark grey is brilliantly versatile. I have one, and wear it for weddings, funerals, business, walks in the park............

I love that tartan and I don't care what you wear with it :0)

I'd say go with a VEST ONLY to save money off the bat. Then, as funds allow, add the jacket.

That being said, make SURE that WHEREVER you get the vest from that it's a 'stock tweed' so you can match it when you're ready to buy the jacket.

Sound advice there, I wear my vests with the jackets more than I do with them.

I would suggest that perhaps you skip the "between" step. Sweaters look fine, and if you don't spend $200 now on something to get you by, you can get the tweed that you really want that much faster.

    Just my $0.02

Rocky are the two tweeds I mentioned stock tweeds? Because if I'm going to buy the jacket and vest I want I'm getting it from you.

I agree with Barry. Save that $100 - $200 now and you can be a good percentage of the way toward getting the nice tweed kilt jacket that you want.

You can get quite nice tweed jackets at the thrift store for around ten bucks. Pay a seamstress another $40 or so to shorten it, and you'll have a decent jacket to hold you over until getting the deluxe set you've set your sights on...!

Drop me an email to discuss... we'll be changing up roughly 1/2 of our tweeds, but we'll still be able to get the others. I'll give you all the info you need to make sure it can be matched later. rocky@usakilts.com
