    What is this tartan?

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MakeTrack=true

    The seller states...

THE TARTAN WAS THE VERY FIRST TARTAN TO BE REGISTERD IN SCOTLAND HUNDRENDS OF YEARS AGO

I have no interest in buying, just curious if the above statement is correct.

Since tartans weren't "registered" hundreds of years ago, I have to believe the seller is either misinformed, or hopes to find a buyer who is.

I love that they tell you that the shoes are a Size 7...I guess you're supposed to guess the size of the kilt and belt. The fact that the seller calls them shoes rather than brogues is probably an indicator that they know very little about what they are selling.

And the questions just keep on coming! Whatever do you think they mean by "USED BUT THE SPORRAN AND SPARE BELT DO NEED SOME ADJUSTMENTS."

Hand me that wrench so's I can adjust this sporran. . .

The Ogilvie Hunting tartan is the "Ogilvie" tartan of the Sobieski Stuart brothers' infamous Vestiarium Scoticum. It is roughly 170 years old, unless one takes the brothers' claims seriously, in which case it dates to 1571 or earlier.

Yes, this is Ogilvie Hunting, aka Ogilvie of Inverarity. I have no idea why they think this was "the very first tartan to be registered hundreds of years ago." As David correctly pointed out, there were no tartan registers hundreds of years ago. Unless, as Morris suggests, this is a veiled reference to the fact that the tartan was included in the Vestiarium Scoticum, published in 1842, but claiming (falsely) to be a record of tartans from a sixteenth century manuscript. Which, even if that were the case, would also have to be true of the other seventy or so tartans included, so this one would not be "the first."

A bunch of nonsense. The kilt itself is not bad looking, though they are not going to be likely to sell it if they don't put at least some information up about the size. As it is there is no way of telling if it will fit me, or my six year old son!
