What "tie" would you rate this?

Afternoon all,

Have a charity event coming up next week for the USO. I will be there as the President of a veteran's organization of a sponsor company, one of the contributors to the auction, and a military member.

Right now it's up in the air whether I should be in a kilt or a uniform. Uniform is right now the front runner but since this is an event to honor active duty and I'm a reservist the kilt is not out of the running.

Going on the idea that I am wearing a kilt what "tie" would you guys think? Let me add I will be sitting at a table with a congress man who was a POW.

I guess I'm confused. This is a USO event and you are military reservist, why wouldn't you wear your uniform? If you're uncomfortable doing that, then a conservative suit and tie would seem appropriate in your leadership capacity.

I just don't see any nexus between this event and the Scottish Highlands/ Scottish culture. If you were the president of the local St. Andrews Society and awarding a scholarship, this would be different. It just seems like you're trying to shoehorn a kilt into a situation where it really doesn't fit.

In terms of a tie choice, why not a nice striped tie in your service colors or a club tie with your service insignia?

The reason I was considering not wearing a uniform is I am not one of the ones being honored but one of those there to honor the active duty. I didn't want to distract from them by being in uniform or being mistaken for them.

One the civilian side all I have is the kilt outfit. I no longer have a suit that fits

That makes complete sense. I recently took the same course when attending a military funeral for an extended family member who was killed in Afghanistan.

In that case, I guess the decision is easy, wear your kilt!

I'd wear the uniform; don't think it'll detract from the honorees, but that's my take. Certainly won't draw more attention than a kilt!

If you wear the kilt, wear whatever you'd wear to any other semi-dressy function. The congressman won't notice your tie unless it has dancing girls or some garish color. Besides, I can't really see where a congressman is more important that you rmother or the honoree.

I think by asking what "tie" the event is (not which tie he should wear) that Drac is asking the forum whether we would assume this is a "black tie" event, a "white tie" event, or a "no tie" event.

I agree with davidlpope in that in a military situation and as the president of a veterans organisation, the only appropriate dress is your military uniform. Coast guard, SEAL or police officer, you are there to pay homage to those who are serving as an ex-serviceman yourself.

I am not a veteran but I see SAM's (Scottish American Military) groups wears the military shirts and medals with a kilt of thie choice. It looks great but I have no idea if it meets expectations of the military??
