White Tie Kilt Dress

I've been asked what the rules on wearing a kilt as white tie are. I was fairly certain that it's ok to wear kilts as white tie and this seems to back that thought up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_t...Highland_dress

However a friend of mine who works for a posh Scottish company has said that his own company only dress in kilts at black tie events cause they don't consider kilts as white tie (and I should stress this is a posh company).

Any thoughts from you kilt police out there?

Hi Philip,

Your friend and / or his company are mistaken. How often do we hear "It's against company policy"? When what they really mean is "I can't be bothered". At the most, someone is worried that the kilt wearer will out shine the CEO. At worst they have no real idea of what kilted white tie looks like and it is easier (and safer) to say no than to say yes.

A doublet would work quite well. Or, you could even wear a PC with a white waistcoat and white bow tie.

You'll look better than anyone else there!

P.S. A regulation doublet would look smashing with the above mentioned accoutrements.

Them being posh doesn't mean they know everything.

Looking at the picture accompanying the article is not the former president's jacket a little short? I understood that the vest should not show below the jacket. Look at Prince Philip's outfit on the left.

Some aide should be shot.

That and his pants are wrinkled in the front. Maybe there should be a tux forum with a "tux do's and don'ts" page thousands of comments long.

The President was lambasted for that baggy and ill fitting White Tie outfit.

I am afraid to say that there is no equivalent Kilt outfit to Full Evening Dress which is known a White Tie and Tails. This form of Dress is proscribed more than probably any other form of dress remaining in society today.
We here would call it a uniform. I should not be changed or altered.

White Tie is only properly worn with the Tail Jacket. The Tuxedo is Black Tie only.

I made a post to the end of the "can you wear a PC in the daytime" thread explaining the difference.

The Doublets are a Military form of formal Dress but are still not suitable when the invitation says "White Tie" or "Full Evening Dress".

And of course if the Invitation dictates the form of dress then that is what should be worn.

I'm afraid that this is one time when the Kilt would be inappropriate.
