Winterish Jackets?

Okay, so, most of you are going to think me nuts, but oh well. I live in Texas and well, though 40's and 50's is not really cold to most of you, (and i know some of you would walk around without a shirt on at that temperature) but in Texas, you can not get used to the cold because the temperature changes 30-40+ degrees in a span of a few hours. Basically, I need a jacket to wear around town and campus. I know Utilikilts has a $50 hoody that you can get fitted to the kilt, but any suggestions on non hoody jackets? Maybe a leather jacket?

For cooler weather I highly recommend a "bomber" style jacket. They're usually (not always) leather; they're typically high-waisted and thus go well with a kilt. If it's REALLY chilly, layer a sweater under the jacket.

Your inquiry comes up every so often and you'll get a lot of pictures and links showing you jacket possibilities.

A lot of this has to do with your personal style and, to a lesser degree, I think, you build. Some guys can pull off a hoodie and look great and some guys wear one and look like a badly packed bag of potatoes...some guys look dashing in one type of jacket while others look like they're trying to wear their dad's clothes. Not that I'm trying to be mean here but you have to go with your strengths here and accentuate the positive and e-liminate the negative.

Best plan is to go to the military surplus store of Kohl's or Penney's or Sears or wherever and just try some stuff on. It's sort of a rule of thumb that one doesn't want something that's too long but there are a lot of things that are slightly longer than waist length out there that'll look good.

I see a lot of jackets that are aimed at the younger and more stylish set (?) and are styled like military tunics and I figger that a couple of them would be good with the kilt. I was drawn to one in a store at the mall and would have grabbed it but then I looked at the price tag (or should I say the OVER-priced tag). Problem with these tunic-y jackets, though, is that they don't seem to make anything larger than a men's size 44...as I said, aimed at the younger set.

But a good shopping trip will probably yield better and more personally suitable results.

I've worn a Navy pea coat with the kilt and been pretty happy with the way it fits etc, and it's super warm of course. You won't need any other layers with the pea coat! Mine is basically a military issue jacket and so dark navy that it's almost black. I think it should work well with virtually any tartan. It's also got this great big collar that reaches almost to your ears when pulled up! Nice against the wind, snow and rain.

I think that pea coat style is kinda comin' back in now, too. Check with some of the bigger department stores to see if they've a stock pea coat that's maybe lighter than a regulation wool one. Ya know, I keep tellin' folks I'm a trend setter, but they just roll their eyes at me... Goes to show ya that if you hold on to your clothes long enough (say twenty years or so) you'll be right back in fashion again, no bother.

Don't know if you've settled on a particular jacket, but I finally snapped some pics of my pea coat "in studio," to wit:





With the pea coat being so incredibly weather proof, you wouldn't need to button it up except for the worst kinds of weather, so no worries about a sporran cut away (not that I would bother with that anyway, but there are some...). It's a bit cumbersome to tote around, but worth it in my opinion.

Geez Loweez, the prices!

Definitely some interesting ideas- probably would want to try 'em on with the kilt prior to purchase. I don't think a regulation Navy pea coat would run you over $100, though, would it?
