    The Black Watch duty uniform

I was looking at the Osprey Men at Arms Series “The Black Watch” and I see that all the kilts pictured are above the kneecap or right at the top of the knee. Now is this because their kilt is a military uniform and would I be period correct if I were to wear my kilt that high? I know not to wear my kilt below the knee, but just how high can you go before you would be accused of wearing a mini-skirt.

Above the knee cap or right at the top of the knee is where I prefer my kilt to sit, it allows the free movement of your legs.

as has been said many times here the length for a Traditional Kilt is the top of the knee cap. Contemporary Kilts can be worn at the middle or bottom of the knee. MUG's are the only things that are worn below the knee.

As far as how hi above the knee cap before it gets skirty the general concensus is two fingers width.

If a period costume then, it depends on the year in question. In general, the earlier the period the higher above the knee. The Victorians started the lowering the hem of the kilt. Wouldn't want to offend the ladies after all. For kilts nowdays, the length should be at kneecap or top of knee. I prefer the old kneel on the floor, and if the kilt just touches or is slightly above the floor, then it's the right length.

If you are ever going to be wearing your kilt out in the rain, and do not have a long enough cape or Inverness coat to stop the lower edge getting wet, you don't want it to be long enough to catch in the back of your knee or it will make the skin really raw really quickly.

This very question (length) came up this morning when I ordered my new kilt. I prefer about half way between top of the knee & mid knee myself as well.

Me, three. This is what the primary two kiltmakers I have dealt with have advised.
