    Thumbs up

Thanks for posting these! My great-great grandmother was a Grant, so I was especially pleased to see that one.

Those renderings are wonderful, thank you for putting them up, I find it interesting to see the difference between the dates.

    Very Cool-
As an amatuer portrait artist, I have been looking for art and pics to practice drawing kilted gents and Highland attire. Thanks for these...they will help!

    Great drawings!

I wonder if they came originally from a set of cigarette cards?

I've pondered the question of buttons on doublets before...am I the only person who has noticed that on what we generally call "regulation doublets" the buttons in former times consisted of 3 (or 4 or 5) buttons on the right side of the jacket along the opening, not the current display of 3 on each side in imitation of a full-dress evening coat ( white tie tail coat)? You can see this clearly by comparing the paintings of Mackenzie and Mackintosh.

But just as soon as I have written this I note that the painting of Macdonald shows 3 buttons aside! Still, though, one would be hard pressed to find a regulation doublet that does not have the ubiquitous 3 and 3 arrangement, without having to go bespoke.
