glengarry in tartan too much?

im thinking of getting a glengarry hat for when im kilted up,
i wear a eight quarter cap hat most of the time outdoors as it is so id feel half dressed without a hat of sorts now the question i am asking is .... would a glengarry of my own tartan(matching my kilt) be too much or do you folk reckon it would look alright

ive found a stockist that sells tartan ones to suit for about £18 which i feel is good value for money so do i or dont i

I would not wear a tartan Glengarry, But if you want to wear one -go ahead there is no law to say you can't.

In general, my advice would be not to wear any kind of tartan cap with a tartan kilt. A solid color cap would look much nicer.

I have seen those who could pull off a tartan tam with their kilt, but I think most risk looking rather cartoonish.

As for tartan glengarries, I've only ever seen those being worn by girls, so they may look a bit feminine to many. I'd stick with a solid color.

err... I would not. I think it would look like you were trying too hard. A Tartan Glengarry instead of a Kilt might be different but I would say definately NOT together. As David says, it's up to you though. Who is the stockist you've found?

I don't think I would, but thats only my own personal opinion. If you look at the figure in the mirror and you really like what you see, then by all means rock on. I just think solid colors look better

I will be the voice of dissent in the crowd and say that it can look good in certain outfits. I have one I wear occasionally with a tweed jacket and vest, solid tie and white shirt and the glengarry to match the kilt, not unlike wearing the tie in tartan matching the kit. A lot depends on what you wear it with and how loud the tartan is. In general, however most folks, as stated above, would not choose it.

Tartan Glengarries can be had at House of Tartan for a reasonable price (about $20US in 500 tartans). I bought the one, wear it occasionally, but do not plan on ordering more. Now a nice casual tartan tam, that is a different matter, worn with or without the kilt.

I would say if going for a Glengarry then no tartan, instead I'd wear a black Glen as it would work with most any outfit, and not be too much. I much prefer a Balmoral to the Glengarry, but this comes down to personal style. To each their own but yes a tartan Glen is a bit over the top for most I'm afraid.

A very simple dark tartan like BlackWatch might work .... but I wouldn't risk it.
