| | | PC vs Holyrood jacket/waistcoat differences
Can anyone explain to me the differences between a Prince Charlie jacket and waistcoat and a "Holyrood" jacket and waistcoat? I have seen the pictures and they look very similar, but is there a difference is level of formalness or some difference in meaning and utility between the two?
I ask because a certain non advertising vendor has scottish made Holyrood jacket and waistcoat on a very special clearance sale for about what it would cost for the waistcoat only, and they actually have my specific size (a real rarity in clearances these days).
Hey, since this would be considered Highland attire, could this sale be considered a modern "Highland clearance"?

What is a "Holyrood Jacket"? I've never heard of one. Can you post pics? Is is just some retailer's name for a slightly modified Prince Charlie?

It looks like a 3 buttoned Argyle without the square chrome buttons. I like the look! I would say that the formality can be almost whatever you want it to be depending on how you dress it up. I dislike the PC in general and would encourage you to go for this!

Is this the style (Holyrood) of jacket you are referring to?

| | | Jeff,
I recently purchased what was called a Holyrood jacket/vest through St. Kilda. Paul, our dear, young Xmember in Scotland, picked it up for me. He gave me the run down before it was purchased. First, it's really a Brian Boru with the harp buttons. On sale for 99.00 GBP. Can't beat that price!!!! It's UK made and has a nice feel to the fabric. Excellent construction. Hope this helps!!! |

which looks to be a crop of this image:
If that is the "Holyrood" ForresterModern is talking about, then I'd agree with denmcdough that's it's actually a Brian Boru jacket. Very similar to the PC but with shawl lapel, round buttons, and gauntletesque cuffs. Considered to be the Irish equivalent to the PC.

It is indeed the Holyrood on sale from St Kilda, and before anybody gets any ideas I already have reserved the 52long, so no snipers on that size, please.
I also saw the "holyrood" listed on the slanj website but I can see that is an entirely different cut, more of a modern tweed with more front buttons.
I guess being like the Brian Boru, the irish equivalent of a PC, but called a Holyrood (which to me is clearly scottish) this would be fine to wear under similar circumstances to a PC? That is my thought anyway. Just wondering since St Kilda seems to be the only one with anything called a Holyrood jacket anywhere on the internet, other than the Slanj monstrosity.

In answer to your question-- there is no difference in the level of formality between a PC and a Brian Boru. I should know as I designed the Brian Boru for Gaelic Themes. Due to the popularity of the jacket it appears as if they are now marketing it through St. Kilda with slightly different trim and calling it the "Holyrood".

| | | Jeff,
Congratulations on holding the 52 Brian Boru. I love mine, so I'm assuming you will, also. It's definitely a great garment for the price. I'll try, this weekend, to post some pics of me in the new tank and BB.
One problem with my BB...took three weeks to get here. Talk about a long wait! I was soooooo excited, though, when I got home from work and looked out on to my porch.
Let us know when you get your BB, and pics are in order! I loved your recent pics with the new kilts!
