Now I just have tofind opportunities to wear itwhere the wife will not give me too much grief about being over- or inappropriately dressed. Ah, I 'll worry about that when the time comes.

Actually the Brian Boru was one of three designs intended to create a similar, but different, look for Irish kilt wearers. The BB was/is intended to compliment the popularity of the PC, while the other two jackets mirrored the regulation doublet and the Sheriffmuir/Montrose jackets.

As designed, the entire ensemble comprised the BB jacket & waistcoat, red hose (according to the costume and textile department at the National Museum of Ireland red hose enjoyed a certain vogue in 18th and early 19th century Ireland) and buckle shoes with unblocked square toes. The sporran is intended to be a red fox with mask, and the sporran strap should be red leather.

Well, with the Holyrood jacket and waistcoat en route (verified the order mailed yesterday--yahoo) we are off to a good start. Not that I am irish or anything, but I do have the red hose and red fox mask sporran. Not much of a fan of buckle shoes (look too much like a pilgrim) so doubt that I would ever complete the ensemble as prescribed, and a red leather sporran strap may be a bit tough to come by as well.

I shall more likely wear it much like a PC with white folded/winged collar dress shirt and bow tie and simple but elegant sporran and shoes, and let the kilt and jacket carry the show.

I've long had a real fondness for the shawl collar, because for a period of about three years when I was in my twenties I could fit into my late father's old shawl collared dinner suit - and compared to everybody else with their contemporary huge pointy sharp collars, even I knew I looked vaguely well dressed.

Thanks for the cudos, but the real credit should go to Scot Chalmers of Gaelic Themes who had the courage of his convictions and who put all of the Irish products (cap badges, kilt pins, kilt jackets, et cetera) into production. He deserves the lion's share of the praise.
