Dear friends and gentle kilties:

I have a "Crail" jacket (cloth epalets barrel sleeves) in medium dark grey with brown buttons. I would like to wear this as one would wear a sport coat with jeans/casual trousers without a tie. it's probably been dealt with elsewhere but since I'm having one of my dense days I can't seem to run it down.

Cutting to the chase: Can this be done and look decent?

Some do, I don't. To me the kilt just doesn't lend itself to the same kind of informality that works with an ordinary jacket and trousers. Funny enough, I do think it looks good when worn with sweater and open collar shirt. But with a kilt jacket, I think it really needs the tie to look right.

It depends on the event, but yes it can be done. Out of interest, what do you mean by "barrel sleeves"? I am just interested,that is all.

It needs the tie because of the way the jacket looks. The epaulet makes the shoulder square, begging a formality that is just incomplete without a tie. It think it's why MoR likes the the non-tie look with a pullover. I agree with him, and I almost never wear a tie with sweater. Not that I wouldn't, I just haven't

Are you wearing the Crail with your kilt or with britches? If you wear it with the kilt, I agree that you need a tie. If you're wearing it with trousers, you'll look like waiter, since the Crail is shorter than a "regular" jacket.

You might get by with a turtle neck, but like RoM, Some do, I won't. (At least in my current mood, I don't think I would.)

Wear the tie. It just looks good. You can wear a less then dressy shirt to sporten the whole thing up (I love English; you can make up words like sporten) and choose a knit tie or something, but I just don't care for the mental image I get of the jacket with an open collar.

What I mean is that the sleeves ar just plain, no embelishment other than a button. The term "Barrel sleeve" was used by the manufacturer and I'm afraid I've picked it up when refering to this type of sleeve. Sorry for the confusion.

As to the event, just casual wear as in out to dinner or up to the pub and around town.

I believe you can wear it without a tie... like a sports jacket.. casual. Just depends on the situation. If you check out Freedom Kilts website, our own (site owner) Steve Ashton wears a jacket ties less, and looks quite nice.. granted.. its a jacket of his design, but I would consider it simular to the Crail.

No, I'm thinking only of the kilt. I just used the trousers as a descriptive tool to illustrate the look I was after.
