A traditional Bear Kilt?

I'm buying some 16oz 'Loud' MacLeod wool tartan tomorrow and I'm going to hand sew myself a traditional style kilt. (Buckles, high waist, stiff liner, etc.) It's not my first choice for a tartan but the price and weight was right for the kilt I want to make. At least the tartan will not go unnoticed.

I'll be making it at home in the evenings, so it won't slow me down at the shop.
If I'm satisfied with the results, I'll be adding another choice to my site. The traditional cut.

I assume that it is going to be a 8 Yarder. Will you be showing it off to the world this Saturday?

I gotta admit that this Mcleod Tartan is growing on me. May be one day.

And what's wrong with MacLeod of Lewis tartan?

I made a "Whistler's Kilt" out of the stuff, and get nothing but raves about it! Sure the pleats all aim to the back, and there's a custom 8 whistle-holding pocket on the right hip... but I get comments on the great colors.

Go ahead. Do your best work. They'll still notice the tartan.

MacLeod's are proud clan of Viking origin. One would comment on their tartan with the greatest respect.

Their clan flag is said to have shown the power to put out fires in its presence. Would be a good tartan for fire departments to adopt.

Should be a fine kilt.

Better listen to Ron as he is a MacDonald. MacLeods and MacDonalds have quite a tumultus history together. ;)

I may have to get a MacLeod of Lewis kilt now in support of my Lewis cousins. I am a MacLeod of Harris. After reading stories of the Lewis branch, the "loudness" of their tartan suits them very well.

I received the MacLeod tartan today. It's gorgeous! It's 16oz twill but soft and much less scratchy than some other wools I've used. The selvedge is invisible.
I also bought some yellow canvas for the liner, some heavy thread, and curved needles.
I cut 8 yards at my length and zig zagged the top edge, so it wouldn't fray while I make the kilt. Everything else I'm going to hand stitch.
I have no idea if it will be ready for Kilts Night this Saturday. I hope so.
