If anybody cares, I use a belt that I found in the ladies's department at the friendly neighborhood Wal-Mart's. It's black on one side, brown on the other, and the buckle swivels to make the belt reversible. I thread it through the loops on the back of the sporran, buckle it behind me, and down the road I go.

And if anyone is interested in this...
I make my straps with a rolled section where the sporran rides. This allows the sporran to rotate a bit more freely when walking or sitting, and I find it more comfortable. Note that the buckle is near this rolled section, so it comes to rest just forward of my right hip for easy buckling and unbuckling, and as others said, no metal on my back to poke me when I sit in a seat with a solid back.

Good idea, Bill....The rolled part.
The strap I just made is a bit narrow and stiff to roll, being made from a set of reins
but the idea is stored away.
so I now have a one-piece strap, and a two piece strap/belt with snaps,
will try 'em both out and see who wins!

Thanks again!!

Not yet, but it's on my list of things to try making. I figure the braiding would allow for a more flexible belt, and a little extra decorative ZING!

There's a video on YouTube that shows how to braid a sporran strap.

For the record, I like the straps that Steve makes at Oconee Leatherworks. It has a small clip that works in a manner similar to the chain straps but won't rub all the wool off your kilt. You can see his stuff here: http://oconeeleatherworks.com/Belts.htm

The clips keep you from having to slide your belt around to the back after you buckled it, assuming that you do slide it around instead of leaving it in the front like Riverkilt. Steve makes first quality products at a reasonable price.

I have one sporan strap which is just a thin belt which I buckle behind my back and its what I wear when I wear a sporran in any situation
