Uniform Help?

So I have this pic of my Great Grandfather Stewart in uniform from some point in time after he moved to Canada, trouble is my Grandfather (his son) isnt very talkative about the past and the picture was once black and white but my Great Grandmother painted it in. Im not sure if the colours of the uniform are correct ( I'm inclined to believe they are) i was hoping someone with great knowledge of this sort of thing could give me at least a little info on the uniform or regiment or something close to that

The 48th Highlanders of Canada wear/wore black sporrans with two white tassels; you can read a bit more about the regiment at Wikipedia. They were formerly allied with the Gordon Highlanders of the British Army, which might explain the primarily green kilt. The regiment was founded in 1891; would that fit the time frame for your great-grandfather?

The regimental tartan of The 48th Highlanders is the Davidson, but pipers wear the Stewart of Fingask.

Why not ask your grandfather if he has any of your Great Grandfather's things or letters. May be a box of great stuff in the attic or basement or closet shelf...if he doesn't know ask if you can look...treasure awaits.

What a great thing to share with YOUR grandkids someday.

If your GGF was in the CEF during the First World War, you may be able to get more information from Library and Archives Canada. I was able to get photocopies of my GF's entire personnel file as this information is now declassified. Try:

Thanks So much for all the info guys, and yes it is indeed a great heirloom but its one I hope I Don't inherit anytime soon. The thing about my Grandfather is that he dosent like when people make a fuss over him so its hard to get a conversation going. maybe i should get him a kilt in Ontario tartan? might get him in the story mood. im not sure if i can get a larger pic as i dont have the actual picture and im no good with photo software. It's the 48th Highlanders of Canada, the tartan is Davidson and, from 1900 thru (at least) the end of the Great War, they were known as the "48th Regiment (Highlanders)". You should be able to get a copy of your great grandfather's service records from Ottawa.

UNIFORM DETAILS: Feather bonnet with white hackle. Balmoral, blue, with diced border. Scarlet doublet. Facings, blue. Tartan, Davidson. Sporran, black, with two white tails. Hose, red and black. Pipers wear Fingask tartan. White shell jackets are worn.

Definitely the 48th (irreverently known as 'the four-dozen highlanders by those of us in the other kilted regiments) - who STILL wear that full dress uniform!

hand-tinting photographs were a popular 'craft' hobby until the introduction of coloured prints - I have the Kodak 'handi-tint' kit that my Auntie used in the '20's and '30's.
