Apropos of Doing as the Royals Do, I offer this little story:

Occasionally, before things got so busy, the Creator of the Universe was known to visit earth and play a round of golf. One afternoon, he found himself not very far onto the fairway and rather loudly asked his caddy for a three iron. The caddy, knowing not to question divine knowledge, handed it to Him, rolling his eyes.

Another caddy happened to be approaching and stopped to commisserate over the poor club choice "Who does he think he is- God Almighty?"

The first caddy admitted, "He IS God Almighty. The problem is he THINKS he's Arnold Palmer."

I agree, if the Prince of Wales or the Duke of Windsor or the Lord of the Isles wears something, it is, by definition correct for him. However, just as not everybody has Arnold P's distance game, we don't always have the Presence required for adventurous sartorial choices.

But that wasn't the question. I think they look good in the way they usually do. I agree about the plaid- it looks like it could turn into a wayward serape without much warning. I think I will let HRH's potential discomfiture be enough to send me on a different path.

    ooops

I forgot to point out how good the checked jacket and waistcoat look with the tartan kilt. Now THERE is a fashion decision I can heartily endorse.

Hmmm... according to Norwegian tradition, rich and powerful people wear crisp, pristine white hose to show that they have others to toil their land for them. Perhaps Mrs. Simpson was of that persuasion?

Good evidence that the kilt hose are ecru, as the spats are most certainly white.
