Adult Size Hair Sporran

Is a 5"x7" pouch on a hair sorran a typical adult size, or would this generally be considered a childs size sporran?

Thanks.

That's most likely a child's sporran. A gentleman's hair sporran would measure at least 12 to 18 inches from the top of the cantle to the bottom of the hair.

I don't know enough about hair sporrans to answer your question, but I have seen some hair sporrans that have very small pouches and others that have no pouch at all.

Thank you very much for that response. It is indeed the same one. It seemed small to me but wanted to make sure.

The typical "cast top" civilian pipe band horsehair adult sporrans were often listed in catalogues as "6 inch" and indeed the cantle was 6 inches wide.

Old sporrans were often wider. I used to have a vintage Cameron Highlanders pipers' sporran and the cantle was 7 inches wide.

Adult horsehair sporrans are usually around 18 inches long in total.

That leads me to a question while we're on the subject, if I may...

Obviously some of us (like me) are shorter than others. At only 5'-7" tall, a full-length adult horsehair sporran would hang way lower than on someone who is 5'-11" or 6'-2". Is there any guideline on how low the bottom of the hair should hang? I see pipe bands and military uniforms where the hair is trimmed neatly and flatly right at the bottom of the kilt or just above it. I also see pictures and paintings of men wearing their hair sporrans with the hair hanging below their knees.

So is there any guidelines on this? And if so, do they differ for civilian versus military? Or is it pretty much just a "wherever it hangs to, that's OK" kind of thing?
