    Alternative Socks for Big Guys

    Quote Originally Posted by Iolaus
Someone posted a link to Sock Dreams a week or two ago. While the site is mostly intended for women, they did have some Over-The-Knee tube socks for $10/pair that looked like they would work. I ordered 3 pair - black, walnut, and natural - and just recieved them in the mail today.

They're the perfect hight with a double roll-over, I've got 17½" calves and they don't feel tight, and they have 15 colors! While some, like the "Bubblegum Pink" or the "Tangerine" might not work, there's bound to be something you need!
I ordered some of these to try them out. They will work, but for me they aren't really over-the-knee socks. They come to just under my knee and I don't get much of a turnover, but I'm 6'2" with a 19" calf. My conclusion is that they would work great for someone who is either tall, or has big calves, but not both.

So, as an experiment, I ordered some of these:

I just got them today and while they are a little long, I can get them up over my calves with plenty left over for rollovers. The extra length just makes for a thicker rollover and works quite well. So, if you're both tall and have big calves like me, these work great for the money at $10/pair. They also come in a variety of colors.

Just don't tell anyone you're wearing women's thigh high socks and no one will know.

I'm so glad you did that. I've been eyeing those for a while and wondering the exact same thing. Thanks! I bet there are some other socks there that would suit a kilt, as well.

I have yet to actually wear them up; I'm more of a dress-down kind of guy. Every time I put them on and pull them up, I feel like it looks weird, so I invariably end up pushing them back down before I leave the house.

On a side note: As a nod to tradition, even though the socks are pushed down, some times I'll stick a folding knife down into the sock, with the clip holding it in place. It's too far down to be functional, but I have a little 2 1/2" utility folder in my sporran if I need to open something.

And don't order the "Bubblegum Pink" ones...that would be a dead giveaway!

Hey Ron, I've got a size 12 foot, and I don't have any problem with them at all.

I have been searching for some darker colour kilt hose that won't break the bank and these seem to fit the bill... NOT that I want to see guys legs but, does anyone care to post some pics so we can see what they actually look like while being worn ?

If $30 for kilt hose isn't breaking the bank, you could try the pipers hose that the British Shop carries. They come in black, stone, and white, and they are really long (made to be double-rolled at the cuff). Although the main photo on the web makes the hose look like they're dark gray, they are really black, just as the title says (see photo below):

    Barb,

Their footwear page 2 shows more than three colors for "Piper Hose."

Dark Blue, Dark Green, Gray, Lovat Blue, Lovat Green, Off White, Pure White, and Stone
