    ammo pouches - versatile!

Last december when I bought a Mosin-Nagant rifle at a gun show, it came with a WW2 era ammunition pouch. It's really two leather pouches with one common backing, meant to hang on a belt up to about 1.75" wide maybe.

I've got this problem where the cheapo pager carrier doesn't do its job and the pager falls out frequently when I am driving. So after cleaning up the ammo pouch, conditioning the leather, I find it is very handy indeed. In the forward pouch I carry my pager. In the back pouch I carry my trump (jew's harp) which was not convenient to carry before.

The only kicker is this is brown leather and all of the other leather I'm wearing is black. *grumble*

Other than that, I think it looks pretty good with the kilt. You can get them for super cheap from military surplus companies.

Buy a bottle of Fiebling's USMC Black dye and an applicator and dye the ammo pouches black.

If you can't find any locally, you can order the stuff from Tandy Leather on-line

Does the pouch have a smooth glossy finish? If so Magnus may need to strip that off first. You can use a stiff bristle brush and canned shaving cream to strip the leather.

There are two types of material here.

The bulk of the pouch is made from a faux leather material with a pebble finish. It's very stiff stuff. Some kind of vinyl maybe? The other material is a soft supple leather used to join the stiff sides together, to make straps for hanging from the belt and for closures.

If the picture link worked right, you should see something here made of similar materials with similar design cues. My pouch is split in the middle into two pouches joined together in the back side by side. But the leather closure straps, the "spike" at the bottom, the pebble-textured sides... all like the one I'm wearing now.
