Another EBay find

Some great stuff on ebay. I just recieved in the mail this set, and was very pleased! The sporran is seal (Illinois seal....) and in great shape. Leather is still supple with no cracking or wear, hair is tight, the tassles are in good shape, and silver plate on the cantle is just in need of a good polish. No sign of it wearing off anywhere at all. A real treat!

The sgian was a nice suprise. The seller had labelled both as silver plate, but when I turned over the sgian I saw it is hallmarked! Nice suprise to find sterling silver rather than the expected silverplate. A real nice vintage piece. Blade has had some hamhanded sharpening, but is in good shape. Stone has a small crack but is hardly noticable. Not sure if that stone is real or not, but nice looking so it doesn't matter. I got both for $300, which seems high but I was already considering buying an L&M dress sporran, as I don't have anything for formal wear yet, and this had the wonderful sgian too!

btw, the little white dot on the sporran was a bit of paint. This was apparently up on a wall on display. I trimmed it out and all is well...

I saw them listed. I figured the lister had no idea what he had. Would have bid on them myself but I've bought several things lately and my wife would have killed me. Congrats on you find, I'm glad one of my brothers here won them.

Oh Happy Day! Love the sgian, a great piece of craftsmanship. Any way you can work out the year from the hallmarks?

Regards

Chas

Congratulations! I bid too, but couldn't justify going that high myself. Glad it turned out to be even more of a find than expected.
Cheers,
John

Yeah, it was more than I had planned on, but I have my first formal event this weekend as a kiltwearer, and am whipping together a formal kit. This was the last bit. The L&M sporran would have cost me around $270-300 plus shipping anyway, so I went ahead. The sgian was a great bonus!
