Best jacket/waistcoat for work?

I will be purchasing a jacket and waistcoat in March. I want to make an informed decision as possible. I will wear the waistcoat at work with a tie with my kilts, but would like the flexibility for evening wear too. Would an argyll waistcoat be too formal for work? I am thinking black, but may look at navy like blue too.

I work in the dreaded Dilbert cubicle world and am in management ... if that helps with the discussion.

I have always heard that charcoal is a good color to start with... Flexible for what you are needing.

I've worn my charcoal Wallace for relatively formal evening occasions, but have also worn it (with or without the vest) during the day.

Since you want versatility to wear the waistcoat and jacket in the evening as well, charcoal is your best bet. Just make sure the buttons are not silvery, that is a bit much for daytime. There are several venders who can supply you with what you need.

Rob Wright is spot on, IMHO. I am hoping for the weekly jeans week fund-raiser to someday wear my different argyll jackets and matching waistcoats. I have a brown herringbone Harris tweed and a plain green ("moss") WC that goes with an inspired Estate tweed jacket. I also have another argyll and WC on order. (I can't help myself!)

I have a Charcoal Argyll with Braemar cuffs, I find it the most versatile jacket in my wardrobe it can easily be worn for anything from going to the office to all but the most formal of events by simply accessorizing differently, it has always worked very well at work, up until recently I was in the same Dilbert environment that you describe. Here are a couple of photos to illustrate what I mean

What color are the buttons? With the recommendation against silver, should one choose buttons that closely match the color of the jacket/vest?
