| | | Best place to buy a sporran?
Hey guys! This is my first post.
I'm also trying to put together my first piping outfit. I've already got a kilt picked out. The Stillwater heavyweight. Now I'm trying to find a sporran, preferably leather with a chain belt, good quality and a reasonable price. Do you have any recommendations?
It would also be great if you could recommend kilt hose, shirts, and hats.

Get the Gaelic Themes piper hose or the Lewis Hose from the Scottish Tartans Museum. The hose are a good place to invest a little more for a good looking pair.
Glengarry Hats has a huge selection of balmorals and glenns but most vendors can provide you a cover at about the same price.
I'd just pick up a plain white shirt to wear with a tie and waist coat. (or another color that works with your kilt.

The previous suggestions are all good. Another good source is Janet Eagleton. She and her son have a workshop and a small store in Perth, Scotland. Her website is not state of the art and the photos on it don't do her sporran's justice but she's a pleasure to work with. She has some very nice basic sporrans or can do a wide range of custom work as well.

The Lewis Hose available through the Scottish Tartan Museum gift shop are great with a good selection of colors. They have a selection of flashes as well, but check out their "Traditional Garter Ties" as well.

First, you may want to consider a sporran belt instead of chains. The chains tend to wear away at the kilt fabric. Second, you might try Thorfinn sporrans. Turpin uses beautiful leather, and the Rob Roy style holds a lot of stuff.

Lewis Hose from STM junkie here. Love 'em. And get some of the traditional garter ties to go with them. Much easier on the legs and sharp looking.
Don't overlook Freelander Sporrans. Stillwater's Nightstalker is probably the best there is for convenience and day-to-day business/casual wear. You can design your own at L&M. Their design dealie is on the Scottish Tartans Museum website.
I agree with "lose the chain/protect the kilt." Get a sporran strap.
And, join the rant and don't patronize sporran vendors who don't but the dimensions of their products in their advertising.
Oh yeah, Nativearth has sporrans too.
And, kinda like kilts...there are sporrans you buy from middlemen and pay a middleman's mark up on and there are sporrans you buy direct from the sporran maker and have direct connect with the craftsman - maybe even to personalize what you want a bit.

All good advice. I'll add that it's hard to beat a Thorfinn sporran, too. An extra flap or two and you've got a whole array of sporrans, and the quality is superb.
