Re: Black Tie affair. White vest
I only like seeing a white waistcoat with a white tie - just my honest opinion. For black tie, either a waistcoat of black, scarlett, or tartan. I think this looks aesthetically pleasing to the eye, coordinated for evening/formal attire, and appropriate for evening/formal functions.
Cheers,

I've been to Camp Geiger many times! I attended boot camp at MCRD San Diego, yes, I am a 'Hollywood' Marine! My main duty station was at Camp Lejeune, NC, right down the street from Camp Geiger, Camp Johnson, and MCAS New River, and not too far from MCAS Cherry Point. I earned my 'jump wings' when my unit was given the opportunity to attend 'jump school' at Ft. Benning, GA. Of course, my CO at the time, 'jumped' (no pun intended) at the chance to send his Marines to jump out of perfectly good aircrafts. It was a fun time, no doubt about it!

Re: Black Tie affair. White vest
OK chaps, for the avoidance of confusion ...
Here's a white vest posted by MacRoberts Reply yesterday.
Looks good to me, but then it is a wedding and he is the minister.
... the dress code for men in the wedding party was morning dress. The fellow between and behind my wife and I is my new son-in-law wearing Anglo-Saxon morning dress. I am wearing the Scottish version. The cream waistcoat is perhaps a little unusual but quite traditional - common in the Georgian, Regency and Victorian eras anyway . In this case it was primarily worn to avoid the black-on-black-on-black problem faced by clergy, which would have been a bit sombre for such a joyful occasion. A case of black-shirt affair, white vest!
PS Thanks for the compliment Chris!

Coloured waistcoats (including white) and black tie Highland attire
There is nothing inherently wrong with wearing a white waistcoat (or any other colour waistcoat for that matter) with Highland attire to a black tie event; true white isn't seen all that often, but it isn't wrong, in the same way that wearing a dirk belt in lieu of a waistcoat isn't wrong. It's just a statement of personal style; nothing more, nothing less. Would I do it? Probably not, but then I most likely wouldn't wear a dirk belt instead of a waistcoat, either. What I wouldn't do (unless I lived in Perthshire) would be wear a white tie to a black tie event.
