brooch questions

i have a couple questions about the brooches. i have seen some postings on here of historical photographs of people wearing brooches. does anyone know the size of those? they seem to be just right in size (aka not too small not too large) especially...well i can't find the photo anymore...

also, how can you tell if the brooch is a kilt brooch or a ladies brooch? thanks. just some random questions i had...thanks!

a brooch is a brooch is a brooch, if you like it, or it fits the need, use it.

so something like this or this wouldn't be too girly or small (both are roughly 38 mm dia.)? or how do you know if it's a kilt brooch or a plaid brooch...

38mm is an inch and a half, probably too small for a fly plaid brooch, but perfect for a kilt pin or worn as an adornment on a ladyfriend, or maybe even a man's jacket lapel (probably not for most men though, me included).

Fly Plaid brooches are typically around 4 inches or so across, give or take the design.

Stitch holder/coat hanger is a good idea, and they can be sharpened easily. But bear in mind you are still poking a wire through the fabric which is much larger diameter than most kilt pins or brooches. Might make an unacceptably large hole.

I just love, admire, and envy your brooch/kilt pin collection. The Miracle stuff really does have a style of its own that in my eye seems perfectly suited to using as a kilt pin on the lively and variegate colored tartans we all wear so proudly.

Look at lots of images. The pics here on XMTS, especially the historical ones, will give you a sense of the development of fashions and may influence your sense of what is proportional and good looking. I have two brooches I wear over my heart on vests - one about 2" diameter:

The other is about 1". I have two others that I wear on my hats. I won't put a pin through my tank though. Too much risk of damage.
Mostly develop your own style and go for it.
