Buffalo Fur Hide Sporran....?

So I'm reading the new September issue of True West Magazine and there's an article on things buffalo, "Where the Buffalo Roam" on Page 80.

They show a picture of a buffalo fur hide possibles bag made by the folks at www.missaprilscarpetbags.com This baby looks like a giant buffalo fur hide sporran, right down to the strap which would make a perfect sporran strap.

She's asking $250 USD for the big bag. Got me to thinking, With all these exotic sporrans being made out of various critters, why not a buffalo hide sporran with fur on?

Could anything be more "American?" Certainly would be a tough long lasting sporran.

Sent her an email to see if there was an interest in making them up...we shall see.

Hmmmm, maybe a leather kilt out of buffalo hide with fur on for winter...maybe fur to the inside....maybe too warm....

The "completely American" idea is what immediately came to my mind Ron! I'd definately love to see a sporran made outta it.

I think a buffalo (bison) hair sporran would be nice. Now that they are a domesticated livestock there is less of that animal trapping/hunting stigma attached to it also. O'Neille

I've made a sporran out of Fishers Raccoon, Beaver and have some Highland Cow coming from a friend who wants one made and will give me the rest. It should be interesting.

Somehow I just knew Kiltman would find his way to this thread - I've seen a couple of his sporrans and they are fantastic!

Do you have some pictures of the beaver sporran or links to all. I'm thinking about having my Dad send me a pelt. I've got two red foxes that I'm thinking about sporranizing. O'Neille

With the rise in Buffalo meat as a lean cow meat (beef, steak, burger, etc) alternative, Buffalo hide should not be to difficult to find. I know Ted Turner has Buffalo on his ranch and encourages domestic, ranch grown Buffalo as a low fat meat. I wonder if he would sell us some hide?

Probably WAY too warm for your winter!! But maybe for some of our northern brethren? Norwegians and Finns?

Buffalo would be awesome, especially since you're from that part of the country! Right now I'm saving up for a custom badger sporran (Go Wisconsin!!!)

I never thought of a buffalo sporran until now. I've been buying meat from several people who raise them here in North Ga. I'll have to ask about the hides, a sporran and buffalo hide kilt sounds interesting.
