I too vote no to a cumberbund. I don't think it would work at all.
If you can avoid it never get into a fair fight.

I think Panache has a good point- the belt with large buckle is better.

I also think the correct spelling is C-U-M-M-E-R-B-U-N-D.

If you wear your kilt at the hips, it can work. Otherwise, there is a good chance that wearing it along the top of the kilt may make you look short-waisted.

    Re: Cumberbund with kilt?

I know a man who wears a cummerbund with the kilt from time to time. He is a senior officer in the Atholl Highlanders, a well-known expert on matters Scottish, and a gentleman who "knows the rules." Jock, Rex, Rathdown, and Chris might know him, but I will not reveal his name! While I do not like the look of a cummerbund with the kilt, some wear them and don't give a hang what people say!

Jamie's photo sums it up perfectly. The cummerbund distracts from the beautiful cut of the jacket and seems to add pounds. A longer jacket can offset the width of the cummerbund. The belt sets off the shorter jacket perfectly.

    I vote no cummerbund.

Thank you all for your input. I really bought it because I wanted the tie and yes I know I should buy a real bow tie. I have not gotten out to buy a dress shirt with the proper collar and have yet to get a belt with a nice waist plate. This Burns Night will be my one year anniversary of kilting so selection is limited. I have been lucky to find some bargin items and have upgraded my outfit.

Stillwater Kilts has reasonably priced belts with waistplates on Ebay. Probably on their own website, too.

Our clan's Chief wears one and I think it looks quite well on him. From the picture it almost looks like his is velvet.
