    darn see through hose

ok so...am I the only one who hates those "see through" hose?
It doesn't happen with with or off white hose quite as much.....but when wearing dark socks pulled up....man I hate that "stretched too tight" look.
Do all dark hose do that? Or just cheap pairs? Do I need a larger size?
What about a pair of dark mens tall dress socks underneath the hose...would that help? grrrr

    NO!

I have a couple pairs of the Sportkilt hose, you can't beat the price but I don't like the stretched see through quality to them (to their credit they are a good choice for hot weather). I'm happy with the Gaelic Themes blend kilt hose, but they go for around $20 (US) a pop.

    Cheers

Although they're a little spendy ($45 US), I've just ordered several more pair of the Lewis kilt hose sold by the Scottish Tartans Museum. I have a pair in grey now . . . well-constructed, warm and no see-through.

I've wondered about Sport Kilts hose; they are priced brilliantly! I only own Gaelic Themes kilt hose, and even though they cost more, they are worth it.

I agree with the Gaelic themes hose. You can find them new on ebay at times for $10 shipped.

I found some thick knee high mens socks at a wholesaler that I buy my sword from. I purchased several pairs of dark blue, a teal colour that matches the stripe in my kilt, and a bright yellow pair. I will go back in there and see if he has any more. If he does I will post a link to his site. They are very nice.

That is why I can't bring myself to buy the soccer or rugby socks that have been touted on the forum before. I have 6 pairs of the Gaelic themes hose and not a one of them could be described as see-through. They are worth the extra couple bucks. Just remember to hand wash them.

If you don't have to have wool hose or the ornate knitting on the leg or cuff I suggest Hamilton Dry Goods socks.

My lower leg is 18" long and 18" around the widest part of the calve. I can't say enough good things about them. I bought 2 pair of off-white and dyed them the color I wanted.

They stay up without flashes while moving around, unrolled they reach over my knee about 3 inches, rolled they still give me a nice beefy cuff.

Cost $8 for socks + a few for shipping
$3 for two packs of Rit Dye (need two for darker colors)

Here's a pic in another thread of the brown hose. http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=23289

I think they look great for anything other than meeting royalty.

No, you're not the only one who hates the see-through look.

Running up to Christmas, I developed a bit of a hose obsession and tried to find a number of different makers to see what works for me (size 7.5 feet, 18-inch calves, 9-inch ankle)

So far, I've tried Lochcarron, Gaelic Themes, Gleann Righ and an unbranded hose.

I'd agree with other posters that Gaelic Themes are worth chasing, but I'd caveat that you need to go for at least their K1500 hose (70% wool) or the merino wool hose - the lower wool content blends feel too scratchy to me (and aren't as warm).

    Best regards

I hate thesee through look as well. I have only ever worn off white hose, and I have never had a problem.
