Double breasted kilt jacket?

While in London I needed on short notice to buy an inexpensive dark brown windowpane tweed wool double breasted jacket (was ill prepared for an expensive dressy dinner) that would be a nice color for a kilt jacket. Can a double breasted jacket be modified into either a double breasted kilt jacket, if such a beast exists and does not look silly, or into a single breasted kilt jacket, for a reasonable fee? I will post a photo later as my wife is currently having the jacket cleaned and pressed after its cramped ride home this weekend. the idea sounds silly, but otherwise I really have little use for such a jacket in my non-kilt daily wardrobe.

I've never seen a double-breasted kilt jacket, but that doesn't mean it can't be done.

If you'll convert that jacket into a 44 long, I'll be glad to store it for a while for you.

Depending on how high the "gorge" or opening is, you might be able to chop off the skirt of the jacket and create a sort of Regency dandy short jacket that could work over a kilt. Had you bought it in bottle green velvet or burgundy, you might find the resulting jacket a little more practical. I think a DB jacket tends to be inherently very dressy for the kilt ( think of the Montrose doublet) but there do exist some interesting jackets made on formal patterns but of less formal fabric. I believe your jacket would fall into that category if you made the conversion.

It might wind up looking suitably Steampunk

Personally, I'd try to swap it with someone who could give you a single breasted model to work with.

i was thinking about the same thing the other day(DB jacket convert to a kilt jacket) but was unsure if it could be done and how it would look.

The only double-breasted kilt jackets of which I'm aware are formal doublets, and tweed isn't usually used in formalwear.

Having said that - Matt Newsome has a very nice Sheriffmuir doublet in grey tweed that he wears very well. Maybe something along the lines of the "Balmoral" doublet (as seen on Prince Charles in the photo below) would work - though it would, of course, be double breasted like a Montrose doublet.

I think it could look very interesting. I can sort of imagine it just as a DB jacket, not necessarily some other type of formal kilt jacket. Of course, I could NEVER do something like that.
