Flashes-My first attempt...

As I was getting my things together for a party tomorrow I found that I did not have any flashes to match my Irish National kilt. I knew not even the lightening fast shipping of SWK could help me. So I did what any x-marks genius would do. I made my own. I had the garters off another set of flashes so all that I needed was the flashes themselves.
I went to Wally World (Walmart) and got some green felt and some felt glue.
Using my Black Watch flashes as a pattern I started cutting. I found a large size papercutter, like you had in school, did a great job. But then I found the felt was too thin by itself so I doubled it and glued a piece of cardboard between the two pieces. It worked great. I also got some red felt to make flashes for my son's Wallace kilt. It is thicker felt so I may not need the cardboard. Will post pics of both on Monday.

May I suggest grosgrain ribbon 1 1/2 wide. It has a nice look comes in various colors and is in most cases readily available.
Back when I could see better I made a number of flashes utilizing grosgrain with very good results.

I must admit I've never tried a felt which might do well at mimicing the flashes made of wool.

Gotta love WalMart... I essentially did something similar, but faster.

- 1" red grosgrain ribbon
- 1 package of 2in1 Velcro
- A stapler

I'm sure you can figure out the rest from there.... ;) Under $10, lasted me a night at the bar, and they're still good to go!

Nice idea! Its fast - dirty - effective but I have to cringe when I think of what that velcro would do to kilt hose (little tiny pills all over my hose.).

Actually, wasn't bad at all. The 2-in-1 velcro has both the hooks, AND the loops, on the same strip (essentially, sticks to itself). The softer loops are longer than the shorter hooks, so its catch-free on everything BUT itself. Rather nifty....
