Flashes with Rosettes?

Just have to wonder, would anybody wear these and for what occasion?

3 inch rosettes and the flashes are 11 inches long? I'm just sort of lost on this one. Is their a historical perspective that I've never heard of?

Well whatever the historical significance may be at $49.95 for Flashes they can keep those, and I really don't know what the reason for them would be anyway.

I think some of the regiments used to wear flashes like that for ceremonial use. Cuillin Craft advertises some very simuilar as Atholl Highlanders, gordon Highlanders, etc. flashes at http://www.cuillinn.com/kilts.html .

It's kind of like the rosettes the Black Watch used to use on their uniforms, I think to distinguish NCOs and officers from lower ranks. A bit of overkill for any civilian I would think.

I really don't think those garters are something I would wear. The guy standing in the photo next to the plane is wearing them. They look like something a Pipe Major or a Drum Major might wear.

Thanks for the link. I have never seen anything like that worn before but then again I don't have any experiences with Scottish regimental heritage.

I definitely agree that it's something that is not for ordinary civilian use.

I've wanted a pair of flashes from Cullin for a while now; perhaps when I order my new regulation doublet. But I see nothing wrong with civilians wearing flashes with rosettes; yes, they are a "military" fashion, but so is a lot of traditional Highland "kit" -- remember that the Scottish regiments created much of the traditions of Highland attire, and that many items, like the kilt pin, the glengarry, and even the cut of kilt jackets -- have a military origin.

Remember, many things that were once "practical" with Highland attire have become more ornamental and traditional, as with many aspects of military uniforms in general. The "buff strap" of the 3rd US Infantry or the rope knot on USMC dress covers stand for very practical things (a knapsack strap and a way to distinguish friend from foe) but are today largely ceremonial.

Now, a Argyll kilt panel -- I wouldn't wear one, because I am not, nor have been, an NCO in the Argylls. Specific Regimental symbols are one thing -- but flashes with rosettes -- based on military fashion, but that's no different than the majority of the Highland attire we wear today.

But I see nothing wrong with civilians wearing flashes with rosettes -- how is that any different from a civilian wearing a tartan of a regiment he did not serve in? Just thinking out loud, not wishing to offend anyone...

Not something I'd wear, they look a bit too... flashy, no pun intended. No reason anyone else shouldn't wear them though. I imagine they might look good during a parade or something, on a band of pipers or whatever.
