    Formal Hose--loads of questions

What are the proper hose to wear with the really formal outfits (i.e., sherrifmuir, Kenmore, regulation, or montrose doublets)? Was that a really sweeping question?

Can I get away with dark green or navy kilt hose (not like the chap I saw in Alexandria Va's Scottish walk wearing regular men's dress socks)?

Do I need to buy tartan hose? Where?

Dark hose in navy blue or some such will work fine. Usually, tartan hose are the epitome of full dress, but they're also pricey.

Go with the tartan hose if you can. They really do look just that much better.

As with anything relating to kilts, you will find many opinions.

For the best formal look - you will always be well suited to wear your best stuff. If you can afford them - go with tartan hose.

As a hose maker I would also like some more clarification on what makes hose formal or casual, or in-between.

What TheScot said was spot on. Some tartan hose can get as expensive as $100 or 200 a pair.

    From the STA website; http://www.tartansauthority.com/Web/...eartheKilt.asp

"White kilt hose is regarded by many as an abomination and should only be worn by pipe bands." " Cream hose is acceptable as are any colours that tone in with the jacket or kilt. Diced or tartan hose can also be worn."

On formal ocassions argyle hose in the colors of the kilt are worn, or diced hose in red and white, red and green or very ocassionally other two color combinations.

It's true they can be expensive, but if you keep your eyes open and are patient you can find bargains.

If you didn't care what happened to me, and I didn't care for you. We would zig zag our way through the boredom and pain. Occasionally glancing up through the rain, wondering which of the buggers to blame, and watching for pigs on the wing.
