| | | Ghillie Brogue Laces
I recently got a pair of ghillie brogues off the net, and they came with regular-length laces rather than the extra-long around the ankle, around the calf, around the block.....er... laces.
I can't say I've noticed anyone wearing shoes like this in a picture, and I'm wondering if it is acceptable to wear them as-is or should I get the long laces. They're brown and go well with my brown leather belt and sporran (therefore less formal to begin with) so I kinda like them the way they are, but I wonder if they'll look strange with the tongue-less shoe design without the fussy lace accompaniment.
Thanks
ren

Do you have a picture, preferrably of you wearing them? I do not see why it couldn't look fine without the long laces, but a picture would really help.

My wife just took some pics of me last night. I'll try to upload when I get home.
They look more or less just like a standard wingtip dress shoe....but with no tongue, so showing some sock color on the top-side.
thanks

Until we see pictures it is hard to make a judgement of whether they might look good short.
However, since the laces are pretty standard laces you can go to a shoe store and get longer brown laces (look for boot laces), then just remove and replace the tassels from your short laces to the longer ones and you should be fine. They are usually only held on with a single knot on the lace.
The only place I have seen selling brown ghillies is Heritage of Scotland, a Gold Brothers store. I have a pair from them that are fine for casual wear and have the long laces. If you cannot find them anywhere else I would assume that they would carry replacements there.
Good luck.

| Keltoi Gaelic Clothing has them too.
I've been really interested in a pair of brown ghillie brogues, but I like a darker brown and every source I've seen only has them in the medium or light brown color.

They now resemble the black light marching brogues in every detail save colour. The brown is actually darker than what is pictured, but is still probably considered a medium brown. It does, however, match exactly with most of the L&M brown sporrans and the kilt belts I sell. I'll have to put a new picture up this week.

Hope this isn't a double-post. Not sure if I hit submit on the first one and it went to moderation, or if I closed the window without submitting.
Alright, here's some pics.
Both hopefully you can see what I'm talking about with my shoes, they weren't the focus of the pics, but I think you can get a good enough look at them.
Also my outfits feature my crail jacket from the Scotland Kilt Co., my saffron heavyweight wool kilt from Stillwater Kilts (from that clearance sale a little while ago), and my amazing sporran from Wyvern Leatherworks.
So, back to the original question. Should I get the long wrap-around laces to go with the shoes, or are they fine as-is?
thanks

Ren,
Your first post was in the mod que awaiting approval, and since your second one had better (larger) pics, I deleted the first one.

IMHO they look just fine as is !! I have trouble keeping the longer laces tied, so short it is for me!! Plus with circulation problems - not a good idea to have that much wrap-around on the legs.
Slainte.
