I don't think I've never seen anyone in Scotland who "put their own outfit together" in ghillie brogues; they always wear black brogues or other plain black shoes instead.

Might be a regional difference between Dumfries & Galloway and the Borders...

Probably not though. I wore them to my own wedding here in Germany and to my sister's in Scotland - I'm not disputing they have a certain flair. [an ye kin end up oan the flair tae, thair gey slippy oan hotel cairpet...!]
Maybe it's just with the proliferation of ghillie brogues, normal shoes stand out more?

I really like ghillie brogues for formal wear; however, for day wear one could wear what we call "wing tips." These are most appropriate for kilt outfits. As far as saying ghillie brogues are a Victorian invention.... and?? Seriously, what's wrong with Victorian inventions?

There's nothing wrong with Victorian inventions. Most of what we call the traditional kilted fashion was formed around this period.

As far as the ghillie brogues, I have nothing against them, but they're not for me. I prefer a simple, well-shined dress shoe for formal wear.
