Gonna try my hand at a sgian, questions

I'm finally gonna try to make me one. I already got the blade I want and the wood for the handle. I was wondering if you knife makers or there order any of the other parts or just make them yourself. I was kinda looking for a blank pommel that I can put a stone in for the end. Thanks for any and all help.

    neo71665,

I can't say I'm an expert or anything. But I have made some "sgian don'ts"
knife handled bottle cap openers, two sgian dubhs, and one dirk. Here are three threads I started that might possibly be of some help (see below).

    Good luck with your project!

    Cheers

Panache, I've seen your expert work and have most of those pages bookmarked.

Atlanta Cutlery, is where I'm getting the blade. I have some black walnut that has been drying in my shed for about 2 years waiting for a project. I have a rather large aquamarine (my birthstone) that I'm wanting to put in the end of the handle kinda like this:

I might be able to make the mount but I suck at working metal much more than normal autobody hammer and dolly work. Would be much easier if i could just find a pre made mount and have my buddy cut the stone to fit.

Personally, when I make something I like to make all the components myself from scratch. I'll very rarely buy a pre-made piece, but there's something much more satisfying about a finished item that's been made from start to finish completely by hand. Of course, it takes more work and more skills, but I still think it's worth it.

Track of the Wolf carries components but nothing that would hold a stone I don't think.

    neo,

I have no metal working skill as well. If you have access to some antler pieces perhaps you could fashion a small stone mount/ endcap for the handle. Horn is pretty similiar in some ways to wood in how you work with it.

    Cheers

I agree but there is a time that you have to know your over your head and have to bow out and take the easy way. Thats why I'm having my buddy cut the stone. I know I can't do it and don't wanna screw it up. If I can't find a stone mount I'll prolly try to make one but was hoping I could find one.
