Head gear

I would like to know what everyone wears on their head when they are kilted. Formal or casual.

If you don't wear anything on your head you should.

I'm partial to 8 panel hats and berets.

And yes, I have a full head of hair. With only a minor amount of facial gain.

My preference is a plain back balmoral with the Chief's Crest Badge of the Clan Cumming, and a cockade in the livery colours (Blue & Gold, the two predominant colours on the chief's arms) of the Cummings. I also sometimes wear a spring of wheat to symbolise the Cummin plant, our plant badge. I normally don't wear the bonnet in "formal" kit, but I do wear it in "day" wear. I also have a diced glengarry that I wear when I am in our St. Andrew's Society colour party for uniformity's sake.

I like the look of a "flat cap", a la Graham, with a kilt, especially with a tweed jacket.

I have also worn a "slouch" hat with a Montana Peak (think Park Ranger or Mountie hat) when I have done some storytelling about the Scots in the North American West.

Heck, I've worn a ball cap (of my favourite micro-brewery!)

I will wear a scally cap (not a la Graham, but a la Colin) in the cooler months, and my thick wavy hair in the not so cooler months. Of course that all comes off in the summer.

I'm with you, Casey. I wear a Balmoral generally out of doors and including formal wear, such as attending Highland Games. I have hitherto worn a white cockade to signify my clan ( Farquharson) being strong Jacobites. I might take up your suggestion of using the livery colours ( white and green) from my Coat of Arms.

I wear a deerstalker flat tweed cap for fishing, hillwalking or bad weather.

I usually wear a hat. People who see me without a hat are suprised to find out I'm not bald (yet) because they assume that's why I wear a hat. I usually wear a beret, although I have a Lovat Blue Balmoral and a green Caubeen that I wear on occasion. I also have English Berets, a leather cap similar to Grahams scally caps, a Tilley thats crusted with pins from the Washington State International Kite Festival, a couple of Stetsons, and one custom made hat similar to Crocodile Dundee's but in a camel color.

Nice to see someone wearing a Caubeen (i.e. an Irish balmoral) -- I've always though Caubeens were striking headgear, especially with the saffron kilt. I want another balmoral in a tan/fawn with lovat or forest green dicing.

Acaig: The livery colour cockade is also a dashing edition to your headgear -- and it saves you potential conflict if you're the only "government" man in a group of Jacobites! "So you're going to wear the kilt" has a pattern on how to make one.
