Homemade Sporron Belt
After being duly rebuked by Hamish about the chain sporron belt I hade been wearing I started doing some thinking (dangerious I know...according to my wife!). I was looking for a leather sporron belt on the web and found several. Because I need one fast (we leave this weekend for Mexico) and the one I found on the web was 2-3weeks away I did what I normally do. Go to Wal-mart and looking for alternatives.
In the baby department I found dual belt set (2 belts on the same tab) for $4.75. Each belt was about 20" long and less than 1/2 inch wide. NOTE: The Boys dept. belts were a little thicker and twice as much for 1 so I went for the smaller ones which looked more like it belonged.
So I took this and started creating. I have some leather tool and rivets so I belted them together and cut the unused ends off. I then took a metal "O" ring about 3/4" and joined them together and there you go a leather sporron belt for under $5.00 retail!
Now, because the belt left little play (too many trips to the frige at night) I got another piece of leather and did the same in the middle to allow a little 'after dinner room'. Still, not bad for an emergency sporron belt. The belt does have 2 side rings which are visible bout 6 inches off center when the sporron is on the belt.
When I get the digital out this weekend I'll post some PIC.
Just something for the 'do it yourselfers' out there.
Also, When I went back to check for something else the one's they had now carry 2 different belts. 1 a black solid and the other a brown woven belt. The woven also would be good if you have a brown sporron.

Richard,
What a great idea I have been looking for an inexpesive way to go for a leather strap, never thinking of going to the baby department.
Thank you

Good ideas Richard. I recently made a sporran belt myself. I have a sporran that has "D" rings riveted to it instead of the normal stiched flap that allow a sporran belt to pass through, so a regular belt wouldn't work. I used the chain to adjust the hight of the sporran and then disconnected the chain so I could measure the length. I had a belt with a damaged buckle so I cut it in half length-wise I measured out the length I needed and riveted brass trigger style latches from the hardware store to the ends. I now have a "fixed length" sporran strap that clips to the "D" rings instead of buckling in the back. I think it's actually more functional to fasten and unfasten the sporran in front of me instead of twisting around to buckle the strap in the traditional manner. I'm thinking I might re-engineer the rest of my sporrans to work the same way.

I don't like the 'clip' type of belt becuase I find getting in and out of the car a problem. So I just slide the sporron to the side then recenter it when I get out. Saw a drummer in a pipe band do this with the base drum and I like the idea. The way I did this belt it is just like a solid belt and the sporron just slides over.

I know what you mean Richard. My belt isn't the clip type that hangs from the main belt. It is a full belt that goes around my waist so it slides just like any other sporran belt, it's just that it fastens at the back of the sporran instead of by a buckle at my back.

Your local thirft store can also be a good source for cheap leather belts.

I work in leather and the sporrans that I've made all use a snap ring belt. When I'm driving I just unsnap the sporran and put it aside. Of the two belts I've made one is adjustable (the nice one with chains on the ends) and the other (my 'everyday') is just a strap with a clip on each end. The clips, leather, and rivets can all be found online from many sources or at many craft stores in the U.S. (Got a nice set of clips from a 'create a purse' section in a fabric store- they had straps too but the ones I cut are cheaper.)

I bought the clips for my sporran strap at a local hardware store. Hardware stores have a fair selection of types, spring, dog leash type and trigger.

Would you guys please post some of your wizardry? I'm really interested in the innovation.
In actuallity I have started to wear my sporran on the front of my left hip(Rob Roy movie) and have found it more comfortable. A sporran was not designed for the car.
