    Many thanks, Graham.
Not quite sure that I am understanding you. Do you mean hose tops or gaiters? I just can't see how hose tops will stop anything getting wet, whereas that is what gaiters are for.

Sorry, meant to add this. A soldier, on duty out side Edinburgh Castle wearing both.

If anyone is interested in giving this item a try, we have some for sale in our gift shop:
    http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/hose_argyle.htm

These are high quality merino-wool blend made in Hawick, Scotland. They are normally $95 each, but if anyone is interested in a deal, I have one pair each on hand in National Scot, Royal Scot, and Hunting Scot patterns (shown in that order in the pic).

I'll let these go for $50. This price only applies to these three in-stock pair only, not new orders. If you want to take advantage of this offer, PM me, or just call me at the museum.

I see no reason why a high boot wouldn't work -- it would just look like you are wearing a boot with a typical Argyle hose.

However, I don't think they would work with normal shoes. You need something low on the leg to cover the bottom of the hose top.

I think there is a problem with terminology here. These are puttees:

The 'How to do it' is here:

As far as I know, puttees are not worn with the kilt, where as the gaiters shown in my first picture are.

I always thought that too. Here is a picture somebody posted on the "postcard" thread showing just that, though. Can't really comment beyond the observation.
