When I was researching the cost of hand-knit hose when we first started offering ours on line, I discovered that the going price of them on most web sites is between $70 and $90 depending on the matierials.

We sell ours for $125. Why more? Well, we let the knitter set her price, for one. And for another, we think they are worth it!

I noticed that most of the hand knit hose I saw for sale on line were hand knit, but not necessarily made-to-measure. In other words, you could get a pair in size 10, or 12 or whatever, but they'd be standard sizes.

Our fiber artist makes each one individually to four different measurments taken from your foot and leg, for a completely custom fit. Excellent for those with larger or smaller than usual calves. So, in my opinion, it was worth the extra cost.

For me a lot would depend on how refined the stiching is, the elegance of the pattern, the skillfulness of the finishing, and the perceived durability. Some of the hand-knit hose I've seen appear to be appropriate for snow shoes, not ghillies. Others are more appealing.

Hand knit kilt hose take a lot of skill and care to get right.... even stitches, symetrical patterns, etc.

It's not fair to compare them to what you buy off the rack at the men's department.

In my experience, hand knit hose look fabulous but don't have quite the wear resistance of every day socks. In fact, I've been known to wear a pair of thin nylon socks underneath to reduce the wear impact of heels and toenails because they are quite expensive.

Machine mass produced knee socks, sport socks, socker socks etc. are passable for general wear, but with ghillie brogues they just don't pass muster IMHO.

I have paid up to $90 for hand knit hose.
My dear mother (80+ years) has knit a couple of pair as gifts.

The next best alternate is probably Heritage kilt hose at ~$70

The hand knit tartan kilt hose are in an even higher price range.

My wife has said she may try to knit some hose.

She knits, crochets, sews, designs (or modifies) patterns for herself, and I love it.

I used to knit years ago (I do sew), but I don't know if I'd try to knit hose!
