Interesting Offering on Ebay
An article from a 1954 magazine showing men in formal kilt attire:

What stands out to me is the total lack of white hose.

White hose are most likely for economic reasons in the rental business. They can just stock one color rather than several diced or tartan hose to match the various tartans. Since the rental places were pushing white people got the notion that was the way to do it.
Everything in excess! To enjoy the flavor of life take big bites. Moderation is for monks.

I think tartanhoses look great when dressed formally...I'll get myself at least 1 pair....some day
They're filthy expensive, but that's understandable...handknitted, made to measure.

Just shows that the Kilt is timeless, even with tartan hose.

I really think the off white hoses look terrible and out of place when I'm wearing my Prince Charlie jacket....fashion or not. They don't match with anything and they look odd.
The tartan hoses are not outdated...just expensive.
Okey...I convinced myself

So the correct traditional style, for formal wear, would be to have hose in the same tartan as your kilt? ...and then have solid color flashes?
