Inverness cape on the cheap

Saw this whilst looking for some stuff to go LARPing this summer:

It's 70 USD. I realise that it's not a nice, tweed inverness cape that will last the rest of my life. However, I just need one that will last a few years of Southern California weather (about three weeks of rain each year) until I graduate and go to grad school in New York. At that point, I might want to invest in something more substantial.

But for now, this seems to be just the thing for your friendly local Poor, Starving Liberal Arts Student who is also a kilt addict.

Agreed. Why don't you check out the theatre arts department of your university and see if you can find another poor starving liberal arts student who would be willing to make you one for a hundred bucks? Option #2 would be to track down your local branch of the Baker Street Irregulars (the Sherlock Holmes society folks) and see if you might be able to buy an Ulster or Inverness from one of them.

Looks a bit costume like for my tastes. Sometimes you just have to pay what you have to to get what you want, perhaps you could save a bit more for one from Empire Canvas Works they are available through the Scottish Tartan Museum as well.
The other thing that I would be concerned about with the cape you are showing is the waterproof aspect, how waterproof would that one be as that really should be a primary concern for to my mind, with the purchase of an Inverness Cape.

Kevin,

Thats a great cloak for a live action role playing game. However, I'm with the others, it is a costume and there is no way to wear it without it seeming like one.

There was a thread about Inverness capes and apparently there are some band ones out there that are lightweight, rain proof, and neatly fold up into a small bundle when not in use. Hamish owns one so it has to be worthwhile.

I'm afraid I am joining those who think it is a costume. Also if you really look at it it doesn't have the same function. There are no buttons on the front (only a clasp at the neck). I think you will also find that it doesn't have arm holes. Certainly you might be able to add buttons and cut arm holes, but if you cut arm holes I think you will find that the outer cape is not long enough to protect your arms from the elements.

You're better off with a piper's rain cape.

The main problem is the length of the cape part, it's self. It is not long enough to cover your arms and actually shed water.

I suggest the storm cape by Empire Canvas Works. It is a wee bit heavy, but it is serious weather protection.
