    IOS tartan waistcoat

My IOS tartan waistcoat that I got on ebay, brand new, and half price because the person who had it custom made ordered the wrong size, arrived. This was the first chance i've had to get dressed up

Not the best picture, i couldn't get it to focus right, but here it is. The jacket is borrowed, not mine, unfortunately.

    What a great score.

I would personally prefer the waistcoat cut on the bias. But, at half price... who's to quibble much eh?

    Congrats.

Yeah, it would have been even nicer on the bias, but for the price I paid, and exactly in my size, i cant complain at all!

Loverly. A beasutiful vest, good match, and such a deal. I too saw it on ebay and considered it myself---glad you got it as it looks better on you than it would on me (and my wife would have killed me).

One thing--It looks like you are likely wearing a kilt belt as the bottom of your vest juts out a bit from your kilt. Just a guess on my part. Most here will tell you convention says not to wear a large buckle vest under a waist coat becasue the waistcoat then will not lie correctly, and besides it is not visible anyway. I personally do not follow convention but instead either wear a less bulky buckle or actually more often turn my belt buckle to the side slightly less than 90 degrees to get it out of the way up front, so I have a flat front when I wear a waistcoat. I wear the belt not to be a rebel but rather becasue I have a paunch and need to wear sporran hangers for my sporran, which require a belt to hang from (at least until I unveil my latest half-cocked invention).

    Cheers!

no belt worn, that's just an artifact of the lighting. I probably should have used the flash on my camera.

Well done then. Ignore the second paragraph of my post.

great shot, Mercier! you look very handsome in it, for sure.

I'm curious as to what is meant about the bias.

Bias describes the direction of the linear portion of the tartan, with one cut and built on the bias being at a 45 degree angle from the horizontal. His kilt would be horizontal and the pattern of the tartan in the vest would be angled 45 degrees "on the bias".

yes, I do see that the vest and kilt look like continuations of one another. but is that such a bad thing?

Tradition, man, tradition. If I remember, everything tartan other than the kilt itself is typically worn on the bias----ties, plaids, vests, jackets, those old-style tartan hose I think are called cadagh---pretty much everything cut and worn on the bias.
