Jacket Buttons

My mom and girlfriend hate these buttons. I thought they were fine, but sometimes it's easier to live when you keep the women happy, so I'm looking to replace them.

They're on my Charcoal Tweed Bramear jacket. (the same one as below, but with brown antler buttons)


I don't want anything as flashy as the buttons on my PC... any suggestions?

The black buttons give that jacket and waistcoat a great look. You could try that.

JoAnne's Fabrics has some very nice "celtic style" buttons available. They are on the website. The Caberfeigh are my favorites.

Get some real antler buttons. Cheesy plastic buttons on such an expensive tweed jacket look like curb feelers on a Jaguar (no offense; they're the same ones which came on my Lovat Green jacket).

Guess I'd better take the curb feelers off my Jag. Oops

You only have two options. Black knotted leather (as suggested by McMurdo) or real antler (as suggested by PioBear). Metal buttons, of any sort, will look ghastly, and plastic suit buttons will look cheesy.

If it were me, I'd go with antler.

Tortoise Shell buttons which tone with the jacket would also look good and authentic.

IMHO, BUTTONS ARE a critical consideration, yet QUITE often over looked.

Here is my take

1. On TWEEDS = LEATHER covered, as McMurdo suggested. ( but I suggest make them removable for dry cleaning purposes )
Antler, Real is great, but a VERY GOOD faux antler, such as the ones Victoria provides (made by the Capt.) are VERY NICE
Wood is also a good type BUT make them "removable" (see below) Dry cleaning will destroy them.

2. On Dressier, such as Crails etc. = Subdued metal, such as Victoria suggested.

NOTE - I advise, if possible, to put your buttons on so they can be removed. This allows you to remove them for dry cleaning & allows you to change your LOOK

Remember that if you choose the leather-covered buttons you should bend the shank sideways when sewing the buttons onto the cuffs and scalloped pocket flaps.
