Jas. Townsend and Son, Over-The-Knee Stocking Review

A while back, I ordered
the dark brown, over-the-knee, wool stockings from Jas. Townsend and Son, Inc. They actually shipped and arrived at my post office box in a couple of days, but it took me a week to be able to get back into town and pick them up. Here is my review.

They are very, very long; folded over twice in the picture. They fit my skinny, bird legs just fine, but would not be for someone with thick legs. I don't know how much they can be stretched, but they might lose some of their bulk if they are stretched too much.

They are not advertised as kilt hose, so I was not expecting them to be the same. They are not knitted in the same way as the other hose I have; looser maybe... they are more like a pair of heavy, knee high socks or regular socks; I don't know the correct terms. They are fairly thick, though, so should be fine for me with a kilt. One other thing is that they have a shallow cable pattern at the very top, and once I figure out how to fold them, that might be somewhat visible on the fold over.

I'm just thankful that I am no longer cursed to wearing only cream colored hose with my kilt. Before too long, I will start a new thread to discuss the outfit in the picture.

Those are great, and you are probably going to be a lot more comfortable in the Arizona heat than in heavier kilt hose. You're lookin' sharp, my man!

Yes they do! I keep looking at their knee-breeches. I would have to hang around golf courses to wear them, though... We do have a lot of golf courses out here.

Thanks for your review on these. I've looked at this shop for several years but never really bought anything from them. This is just my opinion but those hose look a little thin to be worn as kilt hose. Maybe its just the way the sun is hitting them, but its almost like I can see your skin tone underneath them. I've seen this before in other inexpensive kilt hose. Its usually most noticeable in the darker colors. I think that once you have your Lewis hose, you won't wear these anymore.

I do appreciate your attention to details and your efforts to share with the rest of us.

Just to be clear, these are not advertised as kilt hose. I'm not sure "thin" is the right way to describe them... more like a looser weave.

I'm not sure if it is the sun or weave of the stockings. They have a rougher texture than kilt hose, and it may very well be making contrasts with the lighting. As you said, I have Lewis hose on the way, and those hose will be my dress hose.

I can say for sure that someone with thick legs should not even consider these. They are good for my casual wear, and if show through a little, could probably be worn over thin, dark brown, socks as a back up. Not good to be stuck with one pair of socks...

It's still in the nineties during the day over here, so the looser weave is a little more comfortable than my kilt hose.
